A visitor today reminded us of the following quote from John Ruskin - "There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better." Alto Access - The Height of Safety

BS 8620 for low-level working platforms Here's the text of an email fro BSI - no less. Safety and performance criteria on low-level work platforms enhanced by BS 8620 Until last year, a document called PAS 250 provided minimum safety and performance criteria for low-level work platforms (LLWPs) – commonly referred to as podiums or pulpits. PAS 250 has now been superseded by BS 8620 Low level work platform with one working platform with side protection for use by one person with a maximum working platform height no greater than 2.5 m. Specification. This standard was introduced to update and tighten safety and performance criteria on LLWPs. It has industry-wide backing and includes a dimensional change to side protection and modifications to two specific tests. PASMA (the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association) sponsored PAS 250 and participated in the development of BS 8620. They advise that while PAS 250-compliant equipment is not obsolete, users should nevertheless introduce BS 8620-compliant equipment whenever a platform or podium is being replaced. Therefore, manufacturers and users wishing to guarantee that future equipment meets the latest criteria for strength, access, stability and rigidity, should buy BS 8620 now. The New Alto Podium is the only externally accredited BS 8620 Podium. Alto - There is a Safer Way

For anyone who looked at yesterday's post about the tower in Eindhoven - here is my shot at the answers..... I dont know for sure what brand of tower it is - so I dont have the build guide and I'm just working from normal requirements... 2 stabilisers (nearest side) are missing 2 stablisers (far side) appear to be folded in all 8 diagonals are on the far side of the tower - unlikely to be correct - so I reckon thats 4 errors lowest intermediate platform has no guardrails - so thats 4 errors next intermediate platform has one functioning guard rail so thats another 3 The working platform has two guard rails instead of 4 - but they are at 750mm instead of 1 metre - so thats another 4 errors I make that 19 errors that I can see, several of which represent a potentially life changing or ending error for the chap working at the top of the tower.

So here's a bit of fun - have a look at this picture and see how many safety failings you can spot in the construction of this tower seen this summer in Eindhoven railway station.........hope you wouldln't get away with this on Network Rail!
